CDF: Robot Tactic Change; Jason Center Attacked

17 Dec 2008

This is a CDF update. CDF intelligence indicates that the robots have switched tactic. The robots seem to be deploying recon teams, mainly in south central Eudoria. Jason Center in particular has been heavily attacked. There is no indication that the assault was intended to conquer or destroy the city, but appears to be designed to protect a sigint unit that came under attack from colonial militia. CDF Intelligence believes that heavy reinforcements are coming.

Please be advised that a state of emergency is still in effect. Civilians should stay indoors, and should move to shelters as quickly as possible if caught in the open when a robot attack occurs. If you want to help, produce weapons, ammunition and supplies for the troops, or care for the wounded. Colonial militia should defend revive and teleport terminals.

West of Ireland Storytellers: Raise Awareness of PROJECT CHILDREN through Presentation of Holiday Classic - Second Life

West of Ireland Storytellers:
Raise Awareness of PROJECT CHILDREN through
Presentation of Holiday Classic

West of Ireland, Second Life – The talented West of Ireland Library staff is dedicated to promoting quality literary works from around the world with special emphasis on works from Irish and Celtic sources. The Library’s staff of Storytellers will be joined by other notable WOI personalities to form a cast of eleven readers to present Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol for two performances only: Sunday, December 14 at 11am (slt) and Monday, December 15 at 7pm (slt) at the West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center.

All the performers are volunteers and donations are accepted to support Project Children, a real world non-profit positively affecting the lives of children in Northern Ireland: Second Life activity, with meaningful Real Life results. "A Christmas Carol is my absolute favorite Christmas tale” shared Aoife Lorefield, Storyteller and creator of this adapted version, “It's is a story about how changing our hearts can change lives ... what better way for the West of Ireland Library to celebrate these holidays and support Project Children?"

Popular Storyteller Shandon Loring is currently slated to voice the famously flinty and curmudgeonly “Ebeneezer Scrooge”, and will be joined by Storytelling regulars Aoife Lorefield, Derry McMahon, Elder Priestman, Caledonia Skytower and others. Also joining in the merriment will be popular DJs including Spyot Denima as “Fred”, Dave93 Nieuport as “Christmas Present”, and Keira Colclough as “Belle” and “Tiny Tim.” West of Ireland CEO Sioban McMahon will voice “Christmas Past.”

Storyteller Aoife Lorefield has written an adaptation from Dicken’s original with an eye and ear to capitalizing on the musical “Carol” nature of the classic tale. Lorefield’s adaptation focuses less on individual characters, with the exception of a few main significant voices such as Scrooge, and more on the choral aspect of the storytelling.

The success of the library staff’s group/choral story reading of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in October, with capacity audiences for the two performances, inspired them to take on this new project for the December Holidays.

The West of Ireland is a Second Life simulation (sim) created to support the programs of the South Texas Celtic Music Association (STCMA), a recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in the United States. Additionally, the West of Ireland has been approved by Linden Labs, the creators of Second Life, as a certified nonprofit.

The mission of the West of Ireland is to promote Irish and Celtic culture within Second Life and raise awareness of Project Children, while providing guests and community members with an entertaining and welcoming environment and to raise funds for Project Children.

Project Children is an international organization that takes children from Northern Ireland on summer trips to stay with host families in the United States. Catholic and Protestant children are brought together in a calm and multi-cultural environment in an effort to overcome the stronghold of prejudices that have burdened Northern Ireland for so long. The STCMA raises funds for Project Children at its annual Celtic Music Festival and through the Second Life West of Ireland sim to pay the transportation costs for children participating in Project Children.

WOW - World Of Warcraft Breaks Up Marriage

From SLReports.net

David Pollard may be a repeat offender as a Second Life Cheater, but perhaps he would have stayed nearer to the hearth had his Real Life wife been more interested in Real Life, as opposed to spending as much as 20 hours a day playing the Fantasy MMPOG World of Warcraft.

Pollard, 40, admitted he had been having an online affair with a woman from The United States, and the pair's characters are now engaged in Second Life. But he insisted that his real marriage had been a "bit of a joke", and that his affair was prompted by his wife's addiction to World of Warcraft. He said: "I was having this online relationship with this girl in America. It was nothing really major, but then Amy found out about it and went mad, and said 'how could you do this, you bastard? Amy never did anything around the house. She just played World of Warcraft all the time. If I wanted to spend time with her I had to ask, but it was always too much trouble for her to come off the game to spend time with me, so the marriage was a bit of a joke."

Linden Lab doubles-back on approved skins

From Massively
by Tateru Nino

Linden Lab's governance team has started removing vendors for Second Life skins (that is, avatar textures) that are intended to portray teens and juveniles. It is not exactly clear why the action is suddenly being taken, as Linden Lab themselves approved the skins which have underwear 'baked in' to avoid any licentiousness. All in all, the affected skins are less lewd than a K-Mart kidswear catalog.

However, since the vendors depicted the skins 'as is' (that is not completely clothed, so that you would be unable to see what you were trying to purchase), Linden Lab has unexpectedly reneged on previously granted approval and is now acting to remove them. The removals that we are aware of have been appealed, and those appeals have been rejected.

The only comment available from Linden Lab about the removals is "Real-life images, avatar portrayals, and other depictions of sexual or lewd acts involving or appearing to involve children or minors are never allowed within Second Life." -- which does not appear to describe any of the materials removed. The Lab declines to discuss anything related to enforcement actions or content takedowns, as a rule.

Beck Investment Banking Joins Sarah Nerd Estates in WSE Terminal Fallout

From SLReports.net

Joining in today's announcement by Sarah Nerd Estates(SNE : WSE) that complete liquidation is the only recourse, Beck Investment Banking(BBIB : ISE) has been valuated for a final shareholder distribution by ISE CEO Cocky Dagger.

The spectacular, and in many ways, overwhelming dissolution of the World Stock Exchange (WSE), brainchild of LukeConnell Vandeverre, a by some estimates L$1,000,000,000 has been lost to investors and companies alike in what has turned out to be the biggest failure in Second Life Financial History.

The November 30th announcement by Vandeverre that the WSE would continue to exist, but in some form and fashion not at all related or associated to Second Life, came not as a surprise, but for many, a relief after almost a year of investors being held hostage by the hope that some recovery of assets may take place. The Real Person behind Vandeverre's avatar, Luke Connell of Melbourne, Austrailia, may be protected by thousands of miles of ocean, complicated international civial and crimial law, supposedly protective disclaimers on the WSE website, and ultimately, as one market observer stated, "The Lobster Approach---he took the wallet so slow that nobody noticed until it was already gone."

WSE Cuts Ties To Second Life

From SLReports.net

Luke Connell, CEO of WSE operating stock exchange market site, has recently announced all the new decisions that will take effect as soon as WSE 4.0, an improved version not finished yet and with no certain date of launching, and the most surprising is the “removal of all listings based on the operations of businesses in the virtual economy of Second Life”, and “restructuring the simulated market environment to be based on the operations businesses in the real world economy rather than the virtual economy”, which means no more strictly SL corporations and no more strictly SL financial operations.

"Linden can't be trusted with your credit card" says Evan Reuters

15timez.blogspot.com

It seems everyone knows Reuters have left SecondLife EXCEPT the Linden Lab billing department!
According to a post by Evan Maloney on the RegAPI mailing list today he was billed $500 USD on a credit card which he only used to verify his identity on the forums.
Not only have they charged him but because he has an unverified account he cannot get the help from Linden Lab that a premium member is entitled too meaning that it could be months before he can get his money back! He writes:

When is an online fad over?

CS Monitor

The Internet thrives on fads that burn hot, then burn out. We’ve all moved past dancing hamsters, pirates battling ninjas, lonelygirl15, and rickrolling. This year, many assumed we’d seen the end of Second Life. But the lights are still glowing.

In September, Reuters quietly shuttered its virtual bureau in the online world. (No one seemed to realize until a few days ago.) The wire-news service had embedded reporters to cover Second Life since 2006. Now, Reuters joins the growing consensus that staffing an online office isn’t worth the effort. They marked yet another evacuation from pixelland. American Apparel and Mercedes-Benz have closed up virtual shop. Sun Microsystems and Starwood have severely pulled back.

Each defecting company seems to take a piece of Second Life’s legitimacy with it.

NURSES are to use “virtual patients” to learn a better bedside manner

The Sun

NURSES are to use “virtual patients” to learn a better bedside manner, it was revealed last night.

An island just for the ward angels has been set up on the popular online game Second Life.

It will let students interact with virtual patients before they get access to the real thing.

Glasgow Caledonian University has created the island and students will access it next year.

Jacqueline McCallum, senior lecturer in clinical simulation, said: “We are using it to help students with decision-making.”

Former Pixar Exec Joins Second Life Team

From inquisitr.com

An executive from Pixar Animation Studios has joined Linden Lab to help revitalize its Second Life virtual world program. Howard Look has been appointed senior vice president of customer applications and will be in charge of upcoming Second Life improvements and added features.

Look most recently served as vice president of software for Pixar and is credited with helping develop its world-famous filmmaking system. His resume also includes a stint at TiVo, where he was vice president of application software and user experience. He played a “key role in defining TiVo’s functionality and user experience,” his bio states. Prior to TiVo, he led the Silicon Graphics team that built the world’s first VRML-based 3D workstation. Not too shabby.
